Where does a 10,000 lb. elephant take a bath? Maybe the question should be, who gets the water bill? In this newest exhibit at the National Zoo, the Smithsonian decided to go green and replace the old concrete trough that had to be filled and dumped two to three times a week with a fully recyclable, elephant-friendly spa.

This turbo charged system is equipped with state-of-the-art organic filters, ozonators and chemical treatment to handle even the dirtiest elephants. And since elephants aren’t particularly discriminating about their bathroom habits, the system can handle that too. So to answer our initial question, the new elephant pool at the National Zoo.
